6Your right hand, O LORD, glorious in power, your right hand, O LORD, shatters the enemy.

Psalms 118:1, 29

1Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever!

19Open to me the gates of righteousness, that I may enter through them and give thanks to the LORD.

Psalms 118:1-29

1Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good;

for his steadfast love endures forever!

2Let Israel say,

“His steadfast love endures forever.”

3Let the house of Aaron say,

“His steadfast love endures forever.”

4Let those who fear the LORD say,

“His steadfast love endures forever.”

5Out of my distress I called on the LORD;

the LORD answered me and set me free.

6The LORD is on my side; I will not fear.

What can man do to me?

7The LORD is on my side as my helper;

I shall look in triumph on those who hate me.

8It is better to take refuge in the LORD

than to trust in man.

9It is better to take refuge in the LORD

than to trust in princes.

10All nations surrounded me;

in the name of the LORD I cut them off!

11They surrounded me, surrounded me on every side;

in the name of the LORD I cut them off!

12They surrounded me like bees;

they went out like a fire among thorns;

in the name of the LORD I cut them off!

13I was pushed hard, so that I was falling,

but the LORD helped me.

14The LORD is my strength and my song;

he has become my salvation.

15Glad songs of salvation

are in the tents of the righteous:

“The right hand of the LORD does valiantly,

16the right hand of the LORD exalts,

the right hand of the LORD does valiantly!”

17I shall not die, but I shall live,

and recount the deeds of the LORD.

18The LORD has disciplined me severely,

but he has not given me over to death.

19Open to me the gates of righteousness,

that I may enter through them

and give thanks to the LORD.

20This is the gate of the LORD;

the righteous shall enter through it.

21I thank you that you have answered me

and have become my salvation.

22The stone that the builders rejected

has become the cornerstone.

23This is the LORD’s doing;

it is marvelous in our eyes.

24This is the day that the LORD has made;

let us rejoice and be glad in it.

25Save us, we pray, O LORD!

O LORD, we pray, give us success!

26Blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD!

We bless you from the house of the LORD.

27The LORD is God,

and he has made his light to shine upon us.

Bind the festal sacrifice with cords,

up to the horns of the altar!

28You are my God, and I will give thanks to you;

you are my God; I will extol you.

29Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good;

for his steadfast love endures forever!

Psalms 118:1-2

1Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good;

for his steadfast love endures forever!

2Let Israel say, “His steadfast love endures forever.”

Psalms 118:3

3Let the house of Aaron say,

“His steadfast love endures forever.”

Psalms 118:4

4Let those who fear the LORD say,

“His steadfast love endures forever.”

Psalms 118:5

5Out of my distress I called on the LORD;

the LORD answered me and set me free.

God is good all the time and all the time, God is good.

“out of my distress” (118:5)
“all nations surrounded me…on every side” (118:10-11)
“they surrounded me like bees” (118:12)
“I was pushed hard, so that I was falling” (118:13)
“The Lord has disciplined me severely” (118:18)

Giving thanks must not be centered on the goodness of our circumstances.

It must be centered on the goodness of God.

Psalms 118:1

1Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good;

for his steadfast love endures forever!

Psalms 118:6-7

6The LORD is on my side; I will not fear.

What can man do to me?

7The LORD is on my side as my helper;

I shall look in triumph on those who hate me.

Psalms 118:8-9

8It is better to take refuge in the LORD

than to trust in man.

9It is better to take refuge in the LORD

than to trust in princes.

Psalms 118:10-12

10All nations surrounded me;

in the name of the LORD I cut them off!

11They surrounded me, surrounded me on every side;

in the name of the LORD I cut them off!

12They surrounded me like bees;

they went out like a fire among thorns;

in the name of the LORD I cut them off!

Psalms 118:13

13I was pushed hard, so that I was falling,

but the LORD helped me.

Psalms 118:14

14The LORD is my strength and my song;

he has become my salvation.

Psalms 118:15-16

are in the tents of the righteous:

“The right hand of the LORD does valiantly,

16the right hand of the LORD exalts,

the right hand of the LORD does valiantly!”

Psalms 118:17

17I shall not die, but I shall live,

and recount the deeds of the LORD.

Psalms 118:18

18The LORD has disciplined me severely,

but he has not given me over to death.

Hebrews 12:6

6For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives.”

Psalms 118:19-20

19Open to me the gates of righteousness,

that I may enter through them

and give thanks to the LORD.

20This is the gate of the LORD;

the righteous shall enter through it.

Psalms 118:21

21I thank you that you have answered me

and have become my salvation.

Psalms 118:22-27

22The stone that the builders rejected

has become the cornerstone.

23This is the LORD’s doing;

it is marvelous in our eyes.

24This is the day that the LORD has made;

let us rejoice and be glad in it.

3Tell all the congregation of Israel that on the tenth day of this month every man shall take a lamb according to their fathers’ houses, a lamb for a household.

Exodus 12:5-7

5Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male a year old. You may take it from the sheep or from the goats, 6and you shall keep it until the fourteenth day of this month, when the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill their lambs at twilight. 7“Then they shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and the lintel of the houses in which they eat it.

Exodus 12:12-13

12For I will pass through the land of Egypt that night, and I will strike all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and on all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments: I am the LORD. 13The blood shall be a sign for you, on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and no plague will befall you to destroy you, when I strike the land of Egypt.

Exodus 12:14

14“This day shall be for you a memorial day, and you shall keep it as a feast to the LORD; throughout your generations, as a statute forever, you shall keep it as a feast.

God was their salvation.

25Save us, we pray, O LORD! O LORD, we pray, give us success! 26Blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD! We bless you from the house of the LORD.

Matthew 21:42

42Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures: “‘The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; this was the Lord’s doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes’?

Psalms 118:22

22The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.

Matthew 26:19-20

19And the disciples did as Jesus had directed them, and they prepared the Passover. 20When it was evening, he reclined at table with the twelve.

Matthew 26:26-29

26Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.” 27And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, 28for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. 29I tell you I will not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.”

Acts 4:11-12

11This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone. 12And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

And when I think
That God, His Son not sparing,
Sent Him to die,
I scarce can take it in -

That on that cross,
My burden gladly bearing,
He bled and died
To take away my sin!

Then sings my soul,
My Savior God, to Thee;
How great Thou art,
How great Thou art!

Psalms 118:1

1Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever!
