The Power of Words

Robby Pollard, Lead Pastor

All of your words they fall flat
I made something of myself and now you wanna come back
But your love isn’t free, it has to be earned
Back then I didn’t have anything you needed so I was worthless

Piece by piece he filled the holes
That you burned in me at six years old

Proverbs 18:21

21Death and life are in the power of the tongue,

and those who love it will eat its fruits.

James 1:19

19Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger;

James 1:26

26If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person’s religion is worthless.

James 2:12

12So speak and so act as those who are to be judged under the law of liberty.

James 4:11

11Do not speak evil against one another, brothers. The one who speaks against a brother or judges his brother, speaks evil against the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge.

James 3:1

1Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness.

Matthew 23:6-7

6and they love the place of honor at feasts and the best seats in the synagogues 7and greetings in the marketplaces and being called rabbi by others.

James 3:1

1Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness.

1 Corinthians 4:4-5

4For I am not aware of anything against myself, but I am not thereby acquitted. It is the Lord who judges me. 5Therefore do not pronounce judgment before the time, before the Lord comes, who will bring to light the things now hidden in darkness and will disclose the purposes of the heart. Then each one will receive his commendation from God.

James 3:2

2For we all stumble in many ways. And if anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle his whole body.

James 3:3-4

3If we put bits into the mouths of horses so that they obey us, we guide their whole bodies as well. 4Look at the ships also: though they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs.

James 3:5a

5So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things.

Words direct our lives.

James 3:5-8

5So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire! 6And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell. 7For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by mankind, 8but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.

James 3:5-6

5So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire! 6And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell.

James 3:6

6And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell.

James 3:8

8but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.

Words destroy others.

James 3:9-12

9With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. 10From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so. 11Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and salt water? 12Can a fig tree, my brothers, bear olives, or a grapevine produce figs? Neither can a salt pond yield fresh water.

James 3:9

9With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God.

James 3:10

10From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so.

Luke 6:43-45

43“For no good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit, 44for each tree is known by its own fruit. For figs are not gathered from thornbushes, nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush. 45The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.

Words display our hearts.

James 3:13

13Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom.

Words direct our lives.
Words destroy others.
Words display our hearts.
