Sola Scriptura and Soli Deo Gloria

Robby Pollard, Lead Pastor

Five Solas of the Reformation

Sola Gratia (grace alone)
Sola fide (faith alone)
Solus Christus (Christ alone)

Soli Deo Gloria (to the glory of God alone)

Sola Scriptura (Scripture alone)

Ephesians 2:4-6

4But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, 5even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— 6and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,

Ephesians 2:7-9

7so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. 8For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

1 Corinthians 15:1-4

1Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, 2and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. 3For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,

Ephesians 2:8-9

8For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

Soli deo gloria is about worship.

Because salvation is a gift of grace we don’t boast in ourselves, we bow our knee to Christ.

Galatians 6:14

14But far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.

Soli deo gloria is about worship.

Galatians 1:6-7

6I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— 7not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ.

Galatians 1:8

8But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed.

Galatians 1:9

9As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be accursed.

“For the pope is not above, but under the word of God.”

Unless therefore I am convinced by the testimony of Scripture, or by the clearest reasoning, unless I am persuaded by means of the passages I have quoted, and unless they thus render my conscience bound by the Word of God, I cannot and will not retract, for it is unsafe for a Christian to speak against his conscience. Here I stand, I can do no other; may God help me! Amen!” -Martin Luther

Sola Scriptura is about authority.

Mark 7:1-13

1Now when the Pharisees gathered to him, with some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem, 2they saw that some of his disciples ate with hands that were defiled, that is, unwashed. 3(For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they wash their hands properly, holding to the tradition of the elders, 4and when they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they wash. And there are many other traditions that they observe, such as the washing of cups and pots and copper vessels and dining couches.) 5And the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, “Why do your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with defiled hands?” 6And he said to them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written, “‘This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me; 7in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’ 8You leave the commandment of God and hold to the tradition of men.” 9And he said to them, “You have a fine way of rejecting the commandment of God in order to establish your tradition! 10For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.’ 11But you say, ‘If a man tells his father or his mother, “Whatever you would have gained from me is Corban”’ (that is, given to God)— 12then you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or mother, 13thus making void the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And many such things you do.”

Why sola scriptura?

Jesus affirmed the authority of the word of God.

Mark 7:6

6And he said to them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written, “‘This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me;

Mark 7:7

7in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’

Mark 7:8

8You leave the commandment of God and hold to the tradition of men.”

Mark 7:10

10For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.’

Matthew 5:17-18

17“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished.

John 17:17

17Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.

Matthew 24:35

35Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.

Why sola scriptura?

Jesus affirmed the authority of the word of God.
The Scripture alone is God-breathed.

2 Timothy 3:16

16All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,

Why sola scriptura?

Jesus affirmed the authority of the word of God.
The Scripture alone is God-breathed.
As the Words of God, the scriptures reflect his perfection.

1 Peter 1:24-25

24for “All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls, 25but the word of the Lord remains forever.” And this word is the good news that was preached to you.
