Wisdom for Parenting, Part 2

Robby Pollard, Lead Pastor

Godly parenting is training your child to walk in the paths of wisdom.

Proverbs 22:6

6Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.

Get God’s wisdom into your own heart first.

Proverbs 23:12

12Apply your heart to instruction and your ear to words of knowledge.

Proverbs 23:12-14

12Apply your heart to instruction and your ear to words of knowledge. 13Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you strike him with a rod, he will not die. 14If you strike him with the rod, you will save his soul from Sheol.

Parents need to have the loving courage to consistently discipline their kids.

Proverbs 23:13

13Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you strike him with a rod, he will not die.

Discipline is corrective, not indifferent and permissive.

Proverbs 23:14

14If you strike him with the rod, you will save his soul from Sheol.

Job 7:9

9As the cloud fades and vanishes, so he who goes down to Sheol does not come up;

Psalms 116:3

3The snares of death encompassed me; the pangs of Sheol laid hold on me; I suffered distress and anguish.

Isaiah 14:11

11Your pomp is brought down to Sheol, the sound of your harps; maggots are laid as a bed beneath you, and worms are your covers.

Proverbs 22:3, 15

3The prudent sees danger and hides himself, but the simple go on and suffer for it.

15Folly is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline drives it far from him.

Discipline is loving, and should never be done in anger.

Proverbs 19:18

18Discipline your son, for there is hope; do not set your heart on putting him to death.

Romans 5:12

12Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned—

Romans 5:17

17For if, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ.

Proverbs 3:11-12

11My son, do not despise the LORD’s discipline or be weary of his reproof, 12for the LORD reproves him whom he loves, as a father the son in whom he delights.

Proverbs 13:24

24Whoever spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is diligent to discipline him.

Ephesians 6:4

4Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

Discipline should aim at the heart, not compliance.

Proverbs 23:15

15My son, if your heart is wise, my heart too will be glad.

Discipline should aim at heart change, not behavior modification.

Proverbs 22:15

15Folly is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline drives it far from him.

Proverbs 4:23

23Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.

Hebrews 12:11

11For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.

Proverbs 23:15-17

15My son, if your heart is wise, my heart too will be glad. 16My inmost being will exult when your lips speak what is right. 17Let not your heart envy sinners, but continue in the fear of the LORD all the day.
